A Laois county councillor has said that Mountrath and Castletown have been ‘abandoned’ by Bus Éireann.
Cllr James Kelly made the statement at the latest Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick municipal district meeting.
He asked for date as to when ‘promised’ bus shelters would be installed on the R445 at Castletown and at Patrick Street, Mountrath.
In response to cllr Kelly’s motion, senior engineer Stan Cullen said that no funding has been made available.
He said: “The delivery of bus shelters will be subject to funding.
“The National Transport Authority has confirmed that, while Castletown does not qualify for bus shelters under its policy, Mountrath qualifies for a bus shelters in each direction, but funding has not been made available to date.”
“Three years later and we have zilch done,” said cllr Kelly in response to the statement.
“Paul McLoughlin (senior engineer) gave the same answer two to three years ago. I’ve even brought this up at a full council meeting.
“Those towns and villages have been abandoned by Bus Éireann,” said cllr Kelly.
