Three budding scientists from Portlaoise College have been mixing their love of science and sport to come up with a fascinating idea.
The trio have qualified for the finals of the BT Young scientist competition in January which will take place in the RDS, Dublin.
The project title ‘Does heading the ball in football affect your memory and reaction speed?’ is certainly very topical.
TY students Lee Carroll Talbot, Byron Sage McGuirk and Luke Kelly are deep into their investigations and are currently formulating reaction speed tests and memory games as the project really takes flight.
Science teacher Ms. Aoife Fox is assisting the lads and with it being science week from Monday, it’s a real opportunity for science to take centre stage.
Student Lee Carroll Talbot explains the idea came from an interview he saw with former England and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer.
He said: “I remember watching an interview with former player Alan Shearer on the impact heading can have and as me and the lads all play soccer I was interested in finding out more.”
Luke, Byron and Lee have a lot of hard work ahead of them and all in Portlaoise College wish them the very best of luck.
