I The organiser for the Michael D Higgins campaign in County Laois has welcomed the result from the early tallies in county Laois.

“Michael D Higgins is a President that brings people together. Throughout his career in public life he has fought for equality and social justice.
“He has been a strong voice against racism and discrimination in all its forms and he has been a president who always does us proud,” said Barry.
“People voted for the dignity and competency he has brought to the presidency.
“President Higgins has set out a clear vision for his presidency over the next seven years. It is up to all of us to work to fulfil his vision of a real republic in which everyone can participate.”
Cross-party support
The Labour Party area representative for Graiguecullen-Portarlington also stated the he believes the cross-party support for the campaign helped it.
“The Laois for Michael D Higgins campaign was made up of volunteers from Labour, Fine Gael, the Green Party and member of the public that were not aligned to any Political Party.
“Our volunteers were active five days a week throughout the campaign, knocking on hundreds of doors and delivering thousands of leaflets. At no point did we take any vote for granted.
“I am proud to have worked as an organiser for this campaign in county Laois and I would like to thank the hard-working volunteers on the campaign.
”I would also like to thank the members of the public that offered us such warm and welcome support throughout the campaign,” he concluded.
