Dr Tony Humphreys is a renowned psychologist and he will speak in Portlaoise this Thursday evening, August 30, about two courses that he heads up in University College Cork that can now be studied through Laois Third Level.
The two courses have been running in UCC for almost 20 years. Applications are open now but there is a maximum of 16 places on either course.
Interpersonal Communication and Relationship Mentoring are the two courses being offered which are run by UCC but available to study through Laois Third Level in Portlaoise.
The information evening runs from 6.30pm to 8.30pm in the Midlands Park Hotel.
Dr Humphreys’ talk ‘A life examined is a life lived’ will be from 6.30pm to 7pm.

Course Outline – Interpersonal Communication
Communication is the life-blood of any social system (family, health, social, religious, legal, community).
Effective communication entails having an understanding of the dynamics of social systems and the types of communication that operate typically within them. The agent of communication is the self and, indeed, most communication is determined by how the individual communicates with self. The course will focus on both the personal and Interpersonal aspects of communication within and across the particular social systems of which course participants are members.
Duration: 1 Year, Part Time

Course Outline – Relationship Mentoring
Adult relationship with self and others lies at the heart of effective family, social, educational and work systems. The core psycho-social unit in society is the family and research consistently shows that the emotions and social maturity of each parent is the main determinant of family well being.
The course recognises parenting as a profession and the need for parents to be prepared for this complex and multi-task profession. This two year programme is also designed to enhance other adults’ professional effectiveness and organisational effectiveness by increasing the personal and interpersonal maturity of employees and those in leadership roles. Furthermore the programme is designed to train participants in one-to-one relationship mentoring and in the provision of courses on enhancing relationship for community groups and work organisations.
Skills to qualitatively and quantitatively analyse individual and organisational interventions will be developed.
The course is substantially rooted in the theories and practices of psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, sociological theories and experimental psychology.
Duration: 2 Years, Part Time
