A River Barrow tributary needs its banks repaired as the condition of the banks of the River Douglas is deteriorating.
Cllr John Moran gave the warning at the latest Graiguecullen Portarlington municipal district meeting, and asked Laois County Council to look in to the situation.
Falling to bits
“It’s falling to bits. I hope you don’t find rare weeds or slugs or some feckin’ yoke like that and next thing the water would be around the fields,” the cllr warned.
Senior engineer John Ormond said that the repairs depend on the result of a survey that is already underway, by an ecologist employed for the job by the council.
“Once we get that, we hope to go in during the July-August-September period,” he said.
He said almost 4km of the river is being surveyed. Works will be prioritised based on the results and avialable funds, and are subject to the approval of the National Parks and Wildlife and Inland Fisheries Ireland.
