Laois leisure centres could be amalgamated

Portlaoise and Portarlington Lesuire Centres could be amalgamated under a new review.

The two leisure centres in Laois are both funded by Laois County Council, but run by seperate boards of directors.

News of the review emerged during May’s county council meeting.

Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley said she was unaware of the plans when told that it was why her Sinn Fein colleague Aidan Mullins could not be added on to the Portarlington board.

Cathaoirleach Padraig Fleming confirmed that the process is underway

“Because there is a major review of the two Laois leisure centres, it was felt by the board that when no-one knows the end result, to defer anything until after the report,” said cllr Fleming.

Not wanted by Portarlington Leisure Centre Chairman

Chairman of Portarlington Leisure Centre, cllr Eddie Fitzpatrick said the review is conisdering a merger.

“There is a whole issue with the licence grant renewal for the two boards. There could be an amalgamation,” he said.

However, this is not something he agrees with. “We don’t really want one board,” he said.

Port’s board includes seven seats for Port Swimming association, one for the centre manager, three for Laois county councillors, two for council officials and one for Pirhana swimming club.
