A total of thirty-three new families were allocated their new homes at Conniberry Way in Portlaoise this week, it was confirmed at the monthly meeting of Laois County Council.
Council CEO John Mulholland confirmed that the official opening of the housing scheme – a development at the back of Knockmay Road – will take place on June 18, during his monthly management report.
Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley welcomed the news and hoped progress can be made on regeneration schemes at O’Moore Place and Hepburn Court.
The report from the CEO was described as “very positive” by Cllr Noel Tuohy.
“Conniberry Way is a very good news story. People light up when they hear about it,” he said.
Other social houses need to be improved he said, “and brought into the 21st century”. He said houses at O’Moore Place are ones that need to be upgraded.
The Conniberry Way houses were described as “high spec” by Cllr Paddy Bracken,
“The is momentum there now, let’s hope it continues,” he said.
Cllr John Joe Fennelly wished the new residents there “health and happiness in their new homes”.
Cllr Mary Sweeney welcomed the positive news, saying the official opening of the estate is very much looked forward to.
The allocation of houses comes slightly later than expected, with “unforeseen circumstances” holding it up in recent months.
Damage was also caused at the site earlier this year when the site was broken into over a weekend with one house burgled and windows on 11 more broken.
There was also a window smashed on an onsite meeting room as well as on two diggers and a tractor.
