One of the vintage looks that we love time and time again is the pencil skirt.
The first pencil skirt was first created by Christian Dior in the 1940s just after the Great Depression. As you can imagine women of this time embraced the more fitted feminine shape. This style skirt encouraged women to wiggle. Think Marilyn Monroe.
The pencil skirt never goes out of fashion. It’s a classic!
The event that we were attending was The Longines Irish Champions Weekend in September 2017 which took place in the Curragh Racecourse.
Knowing the style we wanted to emulate the hunt was on! We were lucky enough to come across our pencil skirts in Zara clothing store.
As most of you know we are big fans of Zara clothing for their classic styles and clean lines. We went for a houndstooth pattern, black and white with a flicker of red. It had also had a side slit and dipped slightly lower to the back.
We decided to add a black blazer jacket that we previously wore to other events to create a sophisticated look. By adding the fur and diamond brooch to the blazer it elevated this look.
Ladies don’t be afraid to get creative. Stitch, pin, pull and tear as you need. There is something so pleasing about knowing that you have brought the Va Va Voom to your own outfit.
Remember the ladies of the 1940s had no choice because of the lack of money, but to get creative. Sewing machines were relatively new and becoming more popular given women a chance to recreate styles.
Women of the time took their inspiration from the leading ladies in the movies such as Marilyn Monroe, Rita Hayward and Marleyn Dietrich to name a few.
We can’t mention the 1940s ladies without mentioning the very seductive paint on hosiery, ooh what women will do for fashion! Yes it’s true, because of the unavailability of nylon during World War 2 this was very popular in this decade.
We should count ourselves lucky we only have to pop into Penney’s to emulate this look and if they are out of stock you know what to do!
On Friday night we attended the Charity Gala Ball at The Heritage, Killenard. This is an amazing event that supports all different charities annually.
We really enjoyed seeing all the different styles of dresses and the glamour on the night and we will let you know all the details in the next column.
