Planning permission has been granted to construct a retirement village in Stradbally.
North Eastern housing agency plan to build a 16 house development in the town.
Local Councillors Tom Mulhall and Paschal McEvoy have responded positively to this morning’s news.
Cllr Mulhall said that he made representations on behalf of the application, which is to be located near Dunnes Bar.
He said: “When works are complete on this development people over the age of 55 will be recommended off the housing in Laois county council.
“This site location is very convenient to all services in the town as shops, pharmacy, Doctors surgery, restaurants, pubs and churches are all nearby.
“People who have indicated stradbally as their first second or third choice on their housing application will be considered.
“The accommodation will be very suitable for couples or single people as well.”
Cllr McEvoy also welcomed the news.
He said: “This is a brilliant development for the town of Stradbally.
“The need for housing in our local areas has never been greater and I am delighted that this has got the green light.
“Once constructed, the village will be home to many people who desperately need it.”
