An initiative by a local Bikers Shed – First Bike on Scene – could help save lives at the scene of a crash.
The Bikers Shed in Kildangan was established by local bikers from Laois and Kildare for all those interested in motorbikes who may want to learn about safety and maintenance.
“It’s a free for all community garage for bikers where people can come in do some work on their bike or simply for a chat and a cup of tea,” said one of the team leader Derek Gannon.
“Our focus is on bike safety and reducing road deaths by organising various courses and events where professionals come in and do presentations and training.
“We were established only this year but the Bikers Shed has grown very fast,” Mr Gannon said.
The club recently hoted a Fbos (first bike on scene) emergency response course in conjunction with Bikerstraining.ie.
The courses are run by Rodge Byrne and Nick Coward of B.I.K.E.R.S. Training, both qualified healthcare professionals and motorcycle enthusiasts, they are acutely aware of the daily risks bikers face on the road.
Derek explained the idea behind the Bikers Shed.
“Every member is a teacher and a student with different levels of experience, different types of motorcycles and each having different levels of road craft to come to share and learn to fellow bikers while sharing stories of over a cup of tea expanding members contact list and making new likeminded friends,” he said.
Opportunity
“We give new motorcyclist the opportunity to learn at their own learning progression and answer any questions members may have in relation maintenance or road craft,” he said.
New motorcycle driver must successfully complete a minimum of 18hrs tuition by a RSA (Road Safety Authority) for their ADI (Advanced Driver Instructor).
