1 – Iarnród Éireann accused of ‘total lack of respect’ as Portlaoise Train Station left without toilets ‘for months’

Iarnród Éireann have come under fire for “a total lack of respect” shown to Laois customers.

That is according to one local citizen, who alerted LaoisToday about an ongoing problem at Portlaoise Train Station.

2 – Stradbally Town AFC urge Laois County Council to ‘do the right thing’ as club set to miss out on funding

A local sports club this week urged Laois County Council to “do the right thing” and “overturn their decision” on the Community Recognition Fund, which was set up to support communities that hosted people from Ukraine and other countries.

Stradbally Town AFC – who moved out of their long-term rented facility in Stradbally Hall in 2023 when that area was used to accommodate Ukrainian refugees – had applied for funding under this scheme.

3 – ‘I have an issue with Coillte Ireland harvesting our public amenity areas’

There’s no shortage of lovely walking areas in Laois – but the felling of trees in some of the more popular spots has become something of a talking point.

And it was an issue that was raised at this week’s full meeting of Laois County Council with Portlaoise-based Independent councillor Tommy Mulligan proposing that the council engage with Michael Healy-Rae, the Minister of State with responsibility for forestry.

There was a double celebration in Treacy’s of The Heath last Friday for two staff members who started their careers at the iconic establishment in 1996.

The locals gathered in the bar to have a drink with Colm Dunne for a change to celebrate him recently winning the Employee Excellence Award at the Irish Restaurant Awards.

5 – Leinster SFC: Laois make the most of strong start to see off Wexford

The Laois footballers are through to a Leinster championship quarter-final against Louth after a relatively comfortable and deserved win over Wexford this evening in a gloriously sunny Wexford Park.

While there was barely a cloud in the sky, it was the strong sea breeze blowing down Wexford Park that had a major impact on the game.

6 – Leinster Ladies MFC: Eight goal Laois blitz Louth to set up Longford semi final

The Laois minor ladies are through to the Leinster ‘B’ semi finals following a massive win away to Louth this afternoon.

Adrian Slevin’s charges were on fire as they recorded a 21 point victory over their hosts.

7 – Leinster MHC: Laois put Kildare to bed with comprehensive victory to kick off championship campaign

Laois began their Leinster MHC with a comprehensive victory over Kildare in Laois Hire O’Moore Park this afternoon.

Eoin Delaney put in a fantastic performance at corner forward with The Harps clubman notching up 2-5 from play, while Tony Mahony and Donnacha Carroll were both excellent on the half back line for Glen McEvoy’s men.

Electric Picnic has announced major changes to how camping will be done at the festival in 2025.

Four new campsites, which will be wristband only for entry, have been created.

9 – Mountmellick man to represent Laois at annual Mr Personality Festival

Adam Fitzpatrick from Mountmellick will represent Laois at the 18th annual Mr Personality Festival which is being organised by Kilkenny County Macra.

21-year-old is an active member of Mountmellick Macra and has listed Laois’s New Year’s Ball as one of his most memorable Macra moments.
