Laois County Council will take in charge eight housing estates in Portlaoise, Portarlington and Mountmellick

Laois County Council have confirmed they will be taking in charge a number of housing estates across the county.

In total, the Council agreed to take in charge eight estates, including six in Portlaoise, one in Portarlington and one in Mountmellick.

The bulk of the Portlaoise estates are in the Broomville area, on the Dublin Road across from Portlaoise Hospital.

The five estates comprise of Broomville, Broomville Close, Broomville Lawns, Broomville Court and Fieldbrook Drive.

The move was proposed by Independent Councillor Caroline Dwane Stanley and seconded by Fianna Fáil Councillor Catherine Fitzgerald.

Cllr Dwane Stanley thanked Director of Services, Mr Simon Walton, “and all the staff behind the scenes” for bringing all the Broomville-area estates in front of the Council.

“It’s great to see these estates get over the line at last, some of them waiting nearly 40 years to be taken in charge,” Cllr Dwane Stanley said.

Cllr Fitzgerald echoes those sentiments and also thanked everyone involved with getting this “done and dusted.”

The other Portlaoise estate to be taken in charge is Harpurs Crescent, also proposed by Cllr Dwane Stanley and seconded by Cllr Fitzgerald.

In Mountmellick, Laois County Council will take in charge the Grange Hall estate, proposed by Fianna Fáil Councillor Paddy Bracken and seconded by his party colleague, Cllr Seamus McDonald.

In Portarlington, the Council will take in charge Vignoles Gardens, proposed by Independent Councillor Aidan Mullins and seconded by Fianna Fáil Councillor Paschal McEvoy.

Cllr McEvoy proceeded to ask as to why Kylebeg Manor, Stradbally, had not been included, saying he “had expected to see it” on the list.

Ms Angela McEvoy, Director of Services, said she hopes to have the Stradbally estate in front of the elected members for consideration “before the summer.”
