Laois County Council have awarded conditional planning permission for two significant community developments in Mountmellick.
The Board of Management at Scoil Phadraig Naofa received approval for a project at the Davitt Road boys national school.
The application will see the construction of three separate single-storey extensions at different locations in the school.
One single-storey extension to the front/northeast of the school will contain a home school liaison room, a classroom, a resource room and administration accommodation.
A second single-storey extension to the side/southeast of the school containing two new resource rooms and an accessible toilet.
Finally there will be a single-storey extension to the rear/southwest of the school which will contain two new classrooms.
The project will also include the removal of an existing outbuilding to the front/northeast of the school along with minor alterations to the existing school and the re-organisation of the existing car-parking area to the northeast of the school.
The town’s soccer club, Mountmellick United, have also been awarded conditional approval for a development at Smith’s Field.
The original application was made last October after the club was awarded over €90,000 for as part of Sports Capital Grant.
The Smith’s Field site was Mountmellick United’s home ground for many years before they moved across the Owenass River to the club’s new home, Conor Davis Park.
The development is to consist of:
- Replacing the existing grass pitch with a new AstroTurf playing surface,
- New perimeter fencing to the pitch,
- New footpaths and public lighting,
- A new footbridge over the Owenass River linking Conor Davis Park with Smith’s Field.
