The average price achieved for farm land in Laois in 2024 was just under €17,000 per acre, as it increased by 3% on what it was 12 months previously.
In all, 19 farms changed hands, with a total acreage of 1,280. The average price per acre of €16,894 makes Laois the fifth most expensive county in Ireland for farm land – behind only Dublin, Wexford, Meath and Louth.
The figures are according to the latest Land Price Survey in the Irish Farmers Journal which reported last week that there was 19 farm land sales in total in the county in 2024.
Among some of the eye-catching sales was the auction of a 32-acre holding in Morette in Emo for €23,550 per acre by Hennessy Auctioneers. Alongside that holding was a derelict cottage on one acre that went for €205,000.
Hennessy Auctioneers also sold a 42-acre farm with a derelict house in Mountmellick for €508,000.
Joe Coogan Auctioneers sold a 66.5 acre farm in Rathdowney for €1.195 million (just under €18,000 per acre) as well as 39 acres in Tolerton for €650,000, or €16,670.
In all there was 1,280 acres offered for sale on 39 farms. There were a total of 19 transactions.
That is an increase on the 947 acres that were put up for sale in 2023 on 30 farms.
