‘Walk for Justice’ – Event organised in Laois for the late Joe Drennan demanding sentencing changes

REPRO FREE 290824 Today, Joe Drennan was awarded a posthumous BA degree in Journalism and Digital Communication from UL. Joe was a talented and award winning young journalism student who is much missed by staff and his classmates. Earlier this year, a new memorial competition for inclusive journalism in association with The Irish Times was launched in his name. His posthumous degree was collected by his mother and father, Marguerite and Tim, and his sisters Sarah and Ava.Pic Arthur Ellis

A ‘Walk for Justice’ will take place in Mountrath this weekend demanding justice for the late Joe Drennan.

The Mountrath student, 21, was killed in a hit and run incident in October of 2023.

The University of Limerick student was killed by 21 year old Kieran Fogarty of Hyde Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston, Limerick.

In court this week, Mr Fogarty was handed a six-and-a-half year sentence for the crime.

However, that sentence will run concurrently with another longer sentence for a separate offence.

That left the Drennan family heartbroken and outraged as they felt that justice has not been done for Joe.

They have launched a petition calling on the laws in relation to sentencing to be changed.

Posting on social media this week, Joe’s sisters, Ava and Sarah, explained why they are so unhappy.

They said: “My brother, Joe Drennan, was killed in October 2023 by a repeat offender who was given concurrent sentences—meaning he will serve no extra time for taking Joe’s life. This is not justice.

“Right now, Ireland’s laws allow multiple serious crimes to be punished as if they were just one. This must change.

“We are calling for consecutive sentencing for crimes involving loss of life to ensure real accountability.

“Please sign and share our petition to demand justice for Joe and all victims.

“Joe believed so strongly in giving the voiceless a voice and this petition allows ours and other victim’s families to be heard further. Every life matters.”

The walk for justice will take place on Sunday at 1pm, at St Fintain’s GAA Pitch in Mountrath.
