There is sadness in Laois today following the passing of Nino Ciamberlano – the owner of Nino’s Fish & Chips on Main Street in Portlaoise.
From Colle San Magno in Italy, Nino Ciamberlano originally came to Ireland in 1969.
He originally worked for the Macari family in Dublin before he, and his wife Stella, opened their own shop in Oldcastle, Meath in 1976.
The following year, they moved to Mountmellick and, in July 1982, opened Nino’s in Portlaoise.
After a night out in the Laois town, Nino’s was typically the spot where everyone got some food before heading home.
Nino retired in 2004 and he leased the premises to Francesco and Gabriella Caperna – the sister of Dino Forte, owner of the Golden Grill in Lower Main Street.
Following news of his passing last night, there has been an outpouring of tributes on social media.
Among them, Laois TD Brian Stanley paid his respects.
He said: “Deepest sympathy to all of Nino’s family on his sad passing.
“Our thoughts are with you all. May he rest in eternal peace.”
Nino is survived by his wife Stella and four daughters Rosaria, Claudia, Silvia and Cristina.
As a mark of respect, Nino’s will remain closed on Wednesday January 29 and Thursday January 30.
Funeral details have yet to be announced. May Nino Rest in Peace.
