Knockbeg College 7-6 Naas CBS 1-11
First Year Leinster ‘A’ Football Championship Quarter Final
Knockbeg College advanced to the semi final of the First Year Leinster A Football Championship following an excellent win over Naas CBS last week in Eire Og.
They had secured a home quarter final with impressive victories against Patrician Newbridge and Good Counsel of New Ross.
Knockbeg played with the elements in the first half but it took them some time to register their dominance on the scoreboard as they were guilty of wasting chances up front.
After Naas took an early lead, Mark Kennedy settled Knockbeg with a number of excellent points in between two goals from Frankie Doyle.
Knockbeg continued to dominate around the middle with Conor Whelan and Harry McNamara on top.
They finished the half strong with a point from Fionn Harris and some quick thinking by Ethan Lawlor helped him find the net from a free leaving Knockbeg 3-4 to 0-2 up at the interval.
Knockbeg faced into the wind for the second half but started well with a well worked goal from George Conway.
Naas responded with a number of points, two of which were expertly tipped over the crossbar by Sean Townsend.
A quick brace of goals from Aidan Fitzharris helped Knockbeg keep Naas at arms length as but they did get a goal back.
However, another goal by Conway and point from Harris sealed the deal for Knockbeg.
Knockbeg play Clane in the semi final on Thursday, January 30, at 11:45am in Eire Og.
This is effectively a South Leinster final as the Noth Leinster teams are kept the other side of the draw in the ‘A’ Division of the Br Hubert Cup.
Portlaoise CBS have reached the South Leinster ‘B’ final and will face St Peter’s of Wexford next week.
While Heywood CS are in the ‘C’ final as Laois schools are performing very well at this age grade.
