There is sadness in Abbeyleix this week following the passing of a retired Garda who was a devoted member of the local golf club.
John P Halloran, from Carlow Road, Abbeyleix, passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at his home on Thursday, January 9.
Originally from Moyglass in Galway, Mr Halloran is remembered fondly by his colleagues in An Garda Siochana.
He served the people in Abbeyleix as a Garda Sargent for more than two decades.
He is also remembered by all of those in Abbeyleix Golf Club – of which he was a member for 50 years.
His contribution to the club was immense as he served as president, captain, treasurer, competition secretary, handicap secretary and team manager.
Taking to social media, the golf club paid a heartfelt tribute to Mr Halloran.
They said: “John was a dedicated and loyal member of Abbeyleix Golf Club over the past fifty years.
“His contribution to the club was immense in many capacities.
“He was a past president and captain and also served as treasurer, competition secretary, handicap secretary and team manager.
“He was an accomplished golfer having a handicap of five for a number of years and represented the club on various teams.
“He was a regular card player on Sunday nights for the past twenty years. John’s wisdom and wit was legendary.
“He will be missed by his many friends in the club. Leaba i measc na naomh go raibh aige.”
Mr Halloran is predeceased by his beloved wife Patricia and his brother Dermot.
He is deeply regretted by his sons Kieran, Enda, David and Donal, daughter Karen, daughter-in-law Mairead, son-in-law Mark, his brothers Benny, Eugene, Paddy and Stephen, sister Marie, and his grandchildren Amy, Daniel, Chris, Aoibhin and Charlie, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
Mr Halloran will be reposing in the Chapel of Rest adjoining the Church of the Most Holy Rosary, Abbeyleix on Saturday from 6pm with Prayers at 8pm.
Requiem Mass on Sunday at 11am in The Church of the Most Holy Rosary Abbeyleix. Burial afterwards in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
