Deep sadness as tribute paid following the unexpected passing of Clonaslee man Danny McRedmond

There was shock and deep sadness in Clonaslee over the weekend following the unexpected passing of Danny McRedmond.

Mr McRedmond passed away on Saturday December 7 and was a hugely popular figure in his native Clonaslee.

Danny will be sadly missed by his loving wife Kay and daughters Danielle and Claire.

Predeceased by his parents Joe and Julia, Danny will also be missed by sons in laws Denis and Mairtín, his adored grandchildren Dan and Senán, brothers, sisters, brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces, nephews, relatives, work colleagues, neighbours and many friends.

As a mark of respect, Clonaslee-St Manman’s Division 3 league final against Kilcavan scheduled for Saturday was postponed following Danny’s passing.

While the local soccer club, Clonaslee United, paid a heartfelt tribute to him on their Facebook page.

Danny played and managed the club over the years – leading them to a cup final in Dalymount Park at one point.

They said: “It was with great sadness that we learned of the tragic passing of our former player, manager and long time friend of the club Danny McRedmond.

“As a player Danny was a gentle giant on the pitch, but equally adept at scoring goals when he played as a striker, as he was at keeping goals out when he played as a keeper.

“However, his achievements as a player were easily exceeded when Danny took on the manager’s job when he led the club to two cup finals in the one season.

“For a club like Clonaslee United to play a cup final in the legendary Dalymount Park stadium is unheard of, but Danny and the late Gerry Dunne brought our team to an amazing cup run which culminated in a cup final appearance against Romstar United in the home of Irish football.

“Sadly the result didn’t go our way on the day, but it is no exaggeration to say that reaching that cup final is the biggest achievement in Clonaslee United history, and something Danny himself was always very proud of.

“Everyone in the club would like to offer our deepest condolences to Danny’s wife Kay and their two daughters, Danielle and Claire, his brothers and sisters and all the extended family and friends at this sad time. May Danny Rest in Peace.”

Danny will be reposing at the Heritage Centre, Clonaslee on Tuesday from 4pm until 6.30pm.

His funeral Mass will take place on Thursday at 12 noon in St. Manman’s Church, Clonaslee, followed by Burial after Mass in the local Cemetery.
