Some of the best student artists across Laois were honoured recently at a ceremony hosted by the Arts Office of Laois County Council.
Prize winners from the Lions International Peace Poster Competition were welcomed to Áras an Chontae, Portlaoise, for a presentation with President of the Lions Club Sean Cruise.
Abigail Blood from Maryborough NS, Portlaoise, was crowned the overall winner of the Laois contest, beating off competition from nine of the county’s schools.
Abigail’s work will go forward to the next stage of the international competition.
The Lions International Peace Poster Contest is an international contest that allows children, ages 11 to 13, to “creatively express what compassion means to them,” and to “share their unique image of compassion and to encourage social connection and understanding.”
The theme this year was “Peace Without Limits.”

- Kolbe Special School – 1st Prize Sophia Dunne; 2nd Prize Ciarán Cahill
- Maryborough NS – 1st Prize Abagail Blood (Overall Winner); 2nd Prize Macques Morga
- Paddock NS – 1st Prize Rosalie Delaney; 2nd Prize Aoibhe Murphy
- Rushall NS – 1st Prize TJ Dooley; 2nd Prize Rosie Ryan
- Scoil Bhríde Mountrath – 1st Prize Eimear Kavanagh; 2nd Prize Ineyah Baby
This was the 19th year Laois County Council have hosted the event, organised jointly by the Lions Club and the Arts Office.
Competition organisers were Mary O’Riordan and Barbara Stanley, and the judges were artists Ray Murphy and Siobhán Keogh.
