There is deep sadness in Emo this week following the passing of Ned Ryan.

Aged in his early 20s, Ned passed away on Wednesday following a long battle with illness.

2 – In Pictures: GAA President Jarlath Burns officially opens new Arles-Killeen gym

There was great excitement in Arles-Killeen this week as the club officially unveiled their brand new state of the art gym.

GAA President Jarlath Burns was on hand to pull back the curtain to the delight of the huge crowd who gathered on the night.

3 – Sadness in Camross at the death of hugely popular local publican Sean Bergin

There is sadness in the Camross community this week at the death of the hugely popular and well-respected local publican Sean Bergin, proprietor of the Camross Inn.

Aged in his early 70s, Mr Bergin passed away on Saturday after a short illness.

4 – In Pictures: All smiles as Civic Reception held for IFA chairman Francie Gorman

It was a special occasion for Francie Gorman recently as the highest honour that Laois County Council can bestow was given to him.

Francie was given a Civic Reception to recognise all of his achievements to date – with him currently being president of the Irish Farmers Association.

With the Central Applications Office (CAO) now open for applications, it is a good time to take a look at courses which will be available for the first time in 2025.

Some of these new courses will provide extra places on high-demand health related programmes such as Pharmacy, Dentistry, Veterinary and Medicine.

6 – Mary Lou in town to rally the troops as Maria McCormack unveiled as Sinn Féin’s new General Election candidate

Sinn Féin have endured a tricky couple of weeks, to say the least, but there was a show of strength in Portlaoise this week as party leader Mary Lou McDonald arrived to endorse Maria McCormack as their candidate for the impending General Election.

The Killeshin Hotel was alive with the electricity that only an election campaign can generate.

7 – Mountrath man to contest General Election in Laois for People Before Profit

People Before Profit are set to run a candidate in the Laois constituency for the upcoming General Election.

Ken Mooney, 23, from Mountrath, has been selected to represent the party here, with the election set to take place on November 29.

8 – Laois woman to speak about new nutritional and environmental software at UN’s COP29

A Laois woman is preparing to give a speech at the COP29, the United Nations’ 2024 Climate Change Conference, being held in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22.

Laura Kirwan, from Borris-in-Ossary, is Sustainability Lead with Dublin company, Nutritics, and will be speaking at the UN for the second year following two appearances in 2023.

9 – Major Independent boost for Aisling Moran’s General Election campaign

In a significant development which could have a major impact on the forthcoming general election in Laois, the Aisling Moran campaign has received a major boost.

Cllr Moran’s bid to become the county’s first ever female TD has received the official backing and support of three other independent councillors in Laois who have rallied behind her campaign.

10 – Martin Ging: The Portlaoise man who has managed Tinahely to famous Wicklow success and win over Portarlington

He was born and raised in St Brigid’s in Portlaoise and he played hurling and football with The Town – but Martin Ging is certainly a proud Tinahely man these days.

And why wouldn’t he be? Last week he managed the club to their first Wicklow senior football championship success since 1984.
