Sadness in Camross at the death of hugely popular local publican Sean Bergin

There is sadness in the Camross community this week at the death of the hugely popular and well-respected local publican Sean Bergin, proprietor of the Camross Inn.

Aged in his early 70s, Mr Bergin passed away on Saturday after a short illness.

Publican, farmer, community man, he ran the Camross Inn with his wife Pauline and it has been a hub of local life in the area for decades.

An engaging personality, who contributed massively to the warm atmosphere in the pub, the Bergin family were also generous supporters of various community endeavours over the years.

A fine hurler with Camross in his younger years, he won six Laois senior hurling medals on the field of play as a top quality midfielder – his first in 1974 and then part of the five-in-a-row 1976-1980 triumph. He won two more as a sub in 1985 and 1986. He was also on the Camross team that reached the 1976 All Ireland club final.

Sean is deeply mourned by his wife Pauline, daughter Caroline and sons Paddy, Noel and Alan.

Sean will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his family, and his adored grandchildren Grace, Max, Isla, and Seán, sisters Moira, Rita and Irene, brother Aidan, aunt Hannah, daughters-in-law Ciara and Emma, partners Neil and Róisín, sisters-in-law Ellen, Mary, Bernie, Josie, Joan and Marie, brothers-in-law Dermot, John, Joe, Paddy, Seamus, Pat and Joe, and our loyal barman Jerry (Downey), nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family, loyal customers, neighbours and many friends.

Reposing at The Camross Inn, Camross (eircode R32NY28) Monday evening (November 4th) from 4.0’clock, concluding with Rosary at 8.0’clock. Removal on Tuesday afternoon to St. Fergal’s Church Camross, for Requiem Mass at 1.0’clock, followed by Burial in the adjoining Cemetery.
