At LaoisToday, we love a quirky story – and a Laois teenager signing for a Spanish soccer club certainly fits the bill.
Shaun Ochovo McEvoy recently signed a pro-contract with AD Alcorcón who play in La Liga 2 in Spain.
Ochovo McEvoy, who will turn 16 later this year, lives just outside the Spanish capital – Madrid.
Shaun’s connection to Laois comes through his mother Edel who is originally from Ballacolla.
She moved to Spain more than 20 years ago where she works as a primary school teacher.
Edel married her husband Juan and the couple have three children – with Shaun being the eldest.
The Ochovo McEvoy family have a strong connection to Laois as they return home every summer during the holidays.
And during that time, Shaun has always hurled with Clough-Ballacolla and played competitively at U-13, U-15 and minor.
Despite still being U-15 last season, Shaun played at midfield for Clough-Ballacolla minors during the championship.
Shaun would have lined out with the minors again this season but had to return to Spain early to be ready for pre-season training with Alcorcón.
A fast and physically strong player, Shaun typically operates at left back in soccer.
Founded in 1971, Shaun’s club AD Alcorcón currently play in La Liga 2, holding home matches at the Municipal de Santo Domingo, with a 5,100-seat capacity.
Beginning life in the sixth tier of Spanish football, Alcorcón rose through the divisions and reached the Segunda División in 2010.
They remained there until 2022 when they were relegated to La Liga 2 but bounced straight back.
However, their stay lasted just one season and they were relegated back to the third tier for this season.
