There was Laois success at the racecourse in Cork last week as Killeaney Bear claimed glory.
The horse is owned by Shanahoe native Charlie Kerwin and claimed the €6,900 first prize at the Mallow track.
This was in the Racing Again October 1st Handicap which went to post at 7.25pm on Wednesday.
The horse proudly carries red and black silks for Shanahoe and this was his third win of the year.
Killeaney Bear, trained by Andrew Slattery of Tipperary, previously enjoyed wins in Leopardstown and Limerick.
Charlie was joined at the track by his brother Tom, nephew Thomas and Tom’s wife Agnes.
The horse that finished second in the race also had big Laois connections.
Koniag is trained by Portarlington’s Kieran Cotter and was ridden by Ronan Whelan.
Speaking to IrishRacing.com, trainer Andrew Slattery said that Killeaney Bear may run once more this year.
He said: “We made the running in Galway, but it didn’t suit and, while we didn’t want to make it today, they went no gallop and we prefer a faster pace.
“He is a big raw horse, is 16.2hh and I think he will make a nice four-year-old.
“We thought he was a nice two-year-old, he always showed a bit and he is a racy looking type.
“He is improving all the time and we might give him one more run before the end of the season.”
