Laois County Council’s Climate Action team has piloted their new green initiative “Green your Festival Kit Laois.”

The project will offer three key services to festival organisers. Firstly providing guidance on sustainable event management through onsite training and checklists.

These tools aim to ensure that festivals can operate with minimal environmental impact by addressing various aspects such as waste management, energy usage, and resource efficiency.

Secondly the project will supply bin toppers. These bin toppers will display concise information on bins to help attendees separate their waste into three categories of waste, food and recycling.

It is hoped this will reduce contamination and thus increase the amount of recycling while minimising how much of our waste ends up in landfills.

Finally, Watsunn Battery packs will also be supplied to the festivals. These will reduce the reliance on electricity generators which burn fossil fuels and lessen the carbon footprint of these events.

Suzanne Dempsey, Climate Action Coordinator, expressed her enthusiasm for the programme: “This initiative will greatly benefit participating festivals, and we look forward to working with many more events in the coming months.

“This pilot project provides an opportunity for Laois festivals and events to share their experiences, enhance their sustainability credentials, and develop best practices in climate action.”

The Durrow Scarecrow festival will be the first of a number of festivals in Laois that will be influenced by this programme.
