The third year of the John Duggan Memorial Cup is set to get underway in Portlaoise Golf Club on Friday next, August 2.
John Duggan sadly passed away in April 2021 and the first competition held in his memory took place in 2022.
John was widely known in teaching and sporting circles and was heavily involved in the school’s GAA teams over the years as well as with the Portlaoise GAA club, whom he played and coached with.
In 2004 he guided Portlaoise CBS to the All Ireland Colleges ‘B’ football final which they narrowly lost to St Louis of Kilkeel from Down.
John was also involved with the Portlaoise senior hurlers in recent years, working alongside Teddy Fennelly when the club reached the Leinster intermediate final in 2018.
As well as that he was a keen golfer and in 2017 helped a team of Portlaoise CBS and Portlaoise College staff to win the inaugural All Ireland Teachers Golf Championship.
The Heath Golf Club hosted last year’s staging with Seamie Cahill from Mountrath Golf club proving the winner.
Hundreds of golfers have taken part over the two years and organiser Kevin Sheehan is looking forward to a great day.
He said: “We had 97 players last year and the timesheet is starting to fill up for this year. We have the course booked for the entire day.
“There are some brilliant prizes up for grabs. These include two tickets to see Liverpool in Anfield, hotel stay in the Maldron and plenty of golf gear.
“The overall winner also takes away the trophy which is currently in the possession of Seamie Cahill.
“There are three gross prizes and then categories including veteran, Front 9 and Back 9 – while we will also have nearest the pin and longest drive.
“Everyone is welcome. Friends, visitors – anyone at all. It is all about remembering the great John Duggan.”
Anyone interested in playing can WhatsApp Kevin on 086-1649066 in order to book a slot on the timesheet.
