In Pictures: People of Portarlington celebrate French Festival 2024

The very first French Festival was held in 1977 and 47 years later it is still bringing a smile to the people of Portarlington.

During the 17th century, Portarlington was home to a large population of French Huguenot refugees.

They left a legacy of Huguenot style homes and landmarks such as St Paul’s French Church, Arlington House, Lea Castle and Emo Court House.

During this annual festival the town becomes ‘French’ for a weekend.

This includes a blend of arts, theatre, street entertainment, music, dance, and sports, all with a distinctive French flavour.

There is always plenty of French fare to enjoy, with food a central part of the event.

An artisan food market allows local producers to show their French flair.

Photographer Frank Smith was on hand to capture all the festival’s highlights in some wonderful pictures.
