There has been no summer to speak of, with considerably more rain than is to be expected for the summer months.
This has led to growing fears of flooding in the county as well as damage to roads and property.
Speaking at the July meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District, Councillor Conor Bergin addressed these matters with three pointed motions.
The Fine Gael councillor called on Laois County Council to attend to the ongoing flooding issues on the R445 at Aughafan between Castletown and Pike of Rushall.
Mr James Dowling Senior Executive Engineer at the Council’s Roads Department replied, saying roads maintenance crews will attend to the issue “in the coming weeks.”
Cllr Bergin also called for the installation of traffic safety measures on the L1036-40 road at Tinnakill, Coolrain.
Describing it as “a very busy road,” Cllr Bergin said families in the area are living in fear of the speed along that stretch of roadway.
Independent councillor James Kelly supported the motion, insisting the County Council must address the state of the county’s roads over the coming months.
Mr Dowling said District Engineers would meet with the Fine Gael councillor on site to discuss the speeding issues and to discuss the implementation of potential road signage.
Cllr Bergin finished by asking the Council to address safety issues for pedestrians on Castle Avenue, Derrin in Borris-in-Ossory.
Mr Dowling confirmed an inspection will be carried out to assess the issues.
