Meals-on-wheels is a critical component in the care and service of older people, enabling them to remain living in their community or to return to their own homes after hospitalisation.
The fact that this voluntary service runs throughout Ireland is a testament to those who give their time na effort to the cause, but its necessity is also a sad blotch on our country.
The efforts of Meals on Wheels is supported by many wonderful fundraisers, the latest of which took place in Mountmellick.
Local resident Tommy Delaney, owner of Tommy Delaney Fitness Studio, put his shoulder to the stone and raised €1,800 for Mountmellick Meals on Wheels, based in St Vincent’s Hospital.
“I wanted to help the great service Meals on Wheels are doing in our local community of Mountmellick,” Mr Delaney said.
“I think it’s a great service to the elderly they are delivering.
“Its not only about the meals delivered but also about the social interaction that can be a game changer for these people.”
Mr Delaney, running coach, Karl Carthy, and 26 members of Tommy Delaney Fitness Studio raised the money through a nine-week-long running programme, building up to completing a 5km run.
From April to June, the group trained for the run, and completed their 5k together.
“We managed to raise €1800 which was a nice amount of money,” Mr Delaney said.
“In the nine-week program, members trained at home and the group got together every Wednesday evening to get some on person training and encouragement by myself and our running coach Karl.
“My Studio in Mountmellick ran the event, and 26 of our members took part with sponsor cards to raise funds.”
