The Laois Beekeepers association celebrated ‘World Bee Day’ 2024 by welcoming members of Laois PPN groups to the Dunamaise Beekeepers Association Apiary in Stradbally to give them the full experience of keeping and taking care of bees.
Attendees were equipped with Bee Suits allowing them to get up close and see the inner workings of all the hives.
Each hive contains over 40,000 bees, consisting of a queen, drones and thousands of worker bees.
The association was set up in 1975 and their members have a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm in keeping bees.
World Bee Day is observed on the 20th of May Yearly, the date being chosen to acknowledge the birthday of Anton Janša, a pioneer in Apiculture.
World Bee Day shines a light on the habitat of pollinators to improve the conditions for their survival so that bees and other pollinators may thrive.
Pollination is a crucial component for the survival of ecosystems. Nearly 90% of the world’s flowering plant species depend on animal pollination along with 75% of crops and 35% of agriculture.
Pollen from a flower rubs onto a pollinator (bee) then the pollinator brings the pollen to another flower where that flower is fertilised.
Dan Bergin, Laois PPN Coordinator stated: “I would like to thank Dunamaise Beekeeper Association for the wonderful and informative evening at their Apiary on the Cosby Estate here in Stradbally”.
“Thank you to all our PPN Member Groups for coming along to this event. What better way to spend an evening on World Bee Day during Biodiversity Week.
“Laois PPN are delighted to have held this event as part of our Climate Action Project.”
