Joe McDonagh Cup: Old foes Laois and Offaly compete for spot in Leinster Championship

The Joe McDonagh Cup final between old foes Laois and Offaly has been confirmed for Saturday June 8, at 3.30pm in Croke Park.

It is a curtain raiser for the Leinster final between Kilkenny and Dublin which is taking place later in the afternoon at 6pm.

The winners will earn themselves a preliminary quarter final against Cork who finished in 3rd place in Munster while runners-up will play the 3rd place team in Leinster, Wexford.

The winning team will also replace Carlow in next year’s Leinster Championship where they will face the top teams in the province while the runners up will remain in the Joe McDonagh Cup next year.

As of Tuesday morning hill 16 has been opened for the game. Tickets went on sale Monday and are available on ticketmaster.

Live coverage of the game will be available on LaoisToday via our live blog.

Laois are looking to replicate their triumphant win over Westmeath in 2019 while Offaly look to gain revenge after missing out on the Leinster championship thanks to a loss to Carlow last year.

Laois are still the only side to qualify for the quarter final of an All Ireland via the Joe McDonagh Cup route since the competition’s inception in 2018.

The game promises to be a close match up, proven by their meeting in O’Moore Park.

Only for two late goals from Paddy Purcell it would’ve been Offaly who would’ve returned home with the two points that day.

No matter how the game goes Laois will have a prelimanary quater final to look forward to in June.
