Diverse organisations participants celebrate the completion of a ‘groundbreaking’ climate action course in Portlaoise.
The course aims to equip communities with vital skills to tackle climate challenges.
Ireland’s Knowledge Centre for Carbon, Climate, and Community Action (IKC3), Council, has conducted a pilot course titled Systems Innovation for Sustainable Enterprises and Communities (SISEC) focussing on the Portlaoise Low Carbon Town Project.
The course, delivered over a period of three months, focused on empowering local participants as challenge owners with the skills and knowledge necessary to address sustainability challenges within their communities.
The participants of the course work practically using their skills to tackle issues surrounding climate change on a local scale.
One of the highlights for students of the course was the final day when they were awarded certificates for their work.
Along with these they received handmade Brat Bhride scarves by the Portarlington Arts Collective.
The scarves are made from upcycled materials containing wool. Not only were the scarves a nice token, they also reflect the ethos of sustainability which is imperative to the course.
Suzanne Dempsey, Climate Action Coordinator of Laois County council was delighted with the achievement.
She said: “This course has been instrumental in fostering a deeper understanding of climate resilience among participants.
“It has empowered them with practical skills to address sustainability challenges in the Portlaoise Low Carbon Town and within their own organisations.”
