The teaching council have announced Heywood teacher Eamon Dennehey as the newly elected chairperson of the organisation.
Dennehey, who is originally from Kerry has been an engineering teacher at the school for a number of years.
The teaching council is a regulator of the teaching profession in Ireland. The body protects both students and teachers by regulating teaching standards, ensuring a highly qualified teaching profession.
The council was set up on a statutory basis in 2006 and has grown to 37 members of teachers at the top of their profession.
It’s a role that carries huge responsibility in the educational sector.
Eamon said: I’m honoured to be elected as Chairperson of the Teachers Council. I believe we must continue to foster an environment where teachers are supported, valued, and motivated around the highest professional standards of teaching in Ireland.”
Eamon joined the a council in 2022 as a former president of the Association of Secondary Schools in Ireland, Ireland’s main second level teachers union.
He has a Bachelor of technology in education degree from Thomond College, Limerick and was a mainstay on the ASTI committee from the mid 90’s before being elected president in 2021.
Dennehey brings a multitude of practical experience to the position which he attained while teaching in Abbeyleix and has experience working on other committees.
He said: “Teaching is a role of critical importance which prepares students for the challenges and opportunities of the future and so it must be promoted as an attractive, vibrant, and rewarding career choice”.
“The education system must continue to be empowering for teachers with programmes and initiatives that support their creativity, capability, and capacity to deliver a high-quality education for learner”.
Dennehey is ambitious to improve the environment of teaching for students and teachers alike and the evident passion he has for his job will certainly be an asset to the council.
