‘Cycling is for Everyone’ – Bike Week 2024 celebrating the joys of cycling

Bike Week 2024, an annual celebration promoting the joys of cycling, is taking place throughout Ireland from May 11 to 19.

The theme – “Cycling is for Everyone” – emphasises inclusivity, with communities nationwide hosting events and activities throughout the week for all levels, from the seasoned cyclists, to those dusting off the saddle, and even newcomers.

Bike week events are co-ordinated by Laois County Council and delivered by community organisations and schools collaboration with support and funding provided from TFI and Department of Transport.

“Whether you represent a community group or are a member of the public that would like to celebrate cycling in your local area, everyone is welcome to take part,” organisers said.

“People across Laois will be attending a variety of events including group cycles, mountain biking, safe cycling sessions, blueway cycles and family-friendly activities.

“During Bike Week there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

“You won’t have to travel far to join a Bike Week event, as they’re happening all across Laois.

“Even if you don’t own a bike or yours needs fixing, there are options available, including bike hire and maintenance workshops.”

As An Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council, Cllr Pascal McEvoy said at the launch of Bike Week 2024: “there’s no shortage of ways to take part.”

There will be bike rental options available for those who do not own a bicycle, in keeping with the emphasis on inclusivity.

Highly anticipated events include The SVT Activity and Wellness Hub, Durrow Pedal Vintage festival, alongside special occasions like Bike-to-Work Day.

May 15 will be ‘Cycle on Wednesday’, with many schools participating in cycle buses, facilitating children cycling to school.

“If you haven’t been on a bike in a while, Healthy Laois and Laois County Council have even organised special ‘Get Back on your Bike’ classes during Bike week 2024,” organisers said.
