Portlaoise has received a number of improvements to access routes within the town thanks to a grant from Fáilte Ireland’s Destination Towns Capital Investment scheme.
In 2020 Laois County Council was awarded €500,000 for improvements because of the scheme.
Aspects of the project included a range of buildings in the town being painted, new lighting installed in three laneways in the Old Fort area, new street furniture, footpath enhancements and landscaping improvements.
There was also a huge investment on interpretive signing detailing the history of the Town.
The object of this signage is to connect the older traditional section of the town with the newly developed sections of Portlaoise.
The signs in the Old Fort Protector Site display interesting heritage of Portlaoise in an engaging manner and create a sense of place in the historic core area of the town.
The information displayed is meant to be informative and evocative to both residents and visitors. These signs are now in place throughout the town.
Haley Sharp Design were awarded the design contract for this initiative while CLS Signage took responsibility for the manufacturing and erection of the amendments.
This project was welcomed by both visitors and locals for the improved appearance and amenities.
The CE of Laois County John Mullholland acknowledged the support of Fáilte Ireland towards the project and the continued support that they give to County Laois.
He thanked both Haley Sharpe Design and CLS Signage for the beautiful signs and the installation of them.
Mullholland also added that this project complimented the great work that has already been done in the town in recent years and would contribute to the tourism industry in the town, stating that it is a great place to live, work and visit.
Also in attendance at the unveiling was Justin Carey, Manager of Ireland’s Ancient East at Fáilte Ireland.
He stated: Fáilte Ireland is commited to the sustainable development of tourism accross Ireland, which serves as a crucial economic driver and source of employment”.
He concluded his speech positively, adamant that tourists will now spend more time, spend more money and immerse themsleves in the local activities and culture.
