A golf charity event in Portlaoise Golf Club has raised over €14,000 for Cuisle Cancer Support Centre and Kolbe Special School – both located in Portlaoise.
The event was organised by members of the club – James Furlong, Jack Fennell and Michael Dowling.
Northside Red will hold the bragging rights until next year’s event with a narrow 3-2 win but the result is only secondary to the wonderful fundraising for a great cause.
Each centre received €7,062.50 each thanks to generous contributions from the 32 lads competing and Portlaoise Golf Club and DS Sports.
Food was kindly provided for the competitors by Bovine Restaurant in Portlaoise.
The origins of the event date back to eight years ago when a group of friends gathered for a few drinks in remembrance over the passing of one of their mothers.
It was then that they decided they wanted to give back to the Cuisle Cancer Support centre which she used to frequent and thank them for all the work they do.
They decided to hold a ‘Ryder Cup’ style golf charity event by splitting Portlaoise down the middle with 10 competitors from the northside taking on a similar number from the southside.
The tournament grew year on year with it now having 16 players each representing their side of the town.
Many local businesses have joined the cause such as Linesight who have been a great supporter of the event over the years, Bibb Egan Demolition, Onella Underwriting Ltd, Connolly Aluminium, Michael Moore Car Sales & Patrick Ryan Photography.
In all, this year’s iteration was certainly a successful one, the weather stayed good, all involved had an enjoyable day of golf and funds were selflessly raised for two great causes.
