There is shock and sadness in Laois today following the news that a Laois dad has died after a workplace accident.
Mark Walsh, who was originally from Offaly but lived in Esker Hills in Portlaoise, died following an incident in Rochfortbridge, Westmeath, on Monday morning.
Aged in his 40s, Mark is survived by his wife Clare Ann and two children – Fiadh and Daniel.
Mr Walsh previously worked in Portlaoise Leisure Centre alongside Labour County Councillor Marie Tuohy.
He is remembered for his good humoured attitude, decency and kindness to those he worked with and the many people who came through the doors of the Leisure Centre every day.
Cllr Tuohy said that the news of his passing has left everyone who knew him ‘utterly devastated’.
Cllr Tuohy said: “Mark was one of the most genuine people that you could ever meet.
“A lovely person and everyone who knew him is devastated by this awful news.
“He loved his family so much and my heart goes out to all of them. My thoughts are with them. It is just so sad.”
Gardai confirmed that the Health and Safety Authority attended the scene and a report is being prepared.
They said: “Gardaí were alerted to a fatal workplace incident at a commercial premises in Rochfortbridge, Co. Westmeath, yesterday morning, Monday April 15.
“A male in his 40s was pronounced deceased at the scene.
“His body has been taken to the mortuary at Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
“The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has been notified and attended the scene.
“A file will be prepared for the Coroner.”
