A Laois secondary school is making progress towards obtaining a Green Flag Travel Grant from Green-schools Ireland.
Portlaoise College’s Green School Committee is working towards this target with the support of Michèle Castiaux, the Travel Officer from An Taisce.
Their current initiative, the ‘Big Travel Challenge,’ aims to promote sustainable travel to school.
Recently, the committee secured a grant of €20,000 from An Taisce/Green Schools Ireland to extend the school’s bicycle rack.
“This funding will facilitate increased cycling to school and reflects the school’s commitment to promoting eco-friendly transportation options,” the school said.
“The success of the committee’s efforts highlights the value of collaboration between educational institutions and environmental organisations.
“Through such partnerships, values of environmental stewardship can be instilled, inspiring future generations to prioritise sustainability.”
Green-schools Ireland say the ultimate aim of the travel grant “is to increase the number of students walking, cycling, scooting, using public transport or carpooling on the way to school.”
