Gardai are continuing to investigate following ‘disgusting’ vandalism that took place at several graves in Portlaoise last week.

In a seemingly random attack, at least seven headstones were badly damaged at St Peter and Paul’s Cemetery.

It is estimated that this will cost thousands of Euro to repair while several other places of rest were also vandalised.

Gardai have confirmed they are investigating the matter while Fianna Fail Councillor Catherine Fitzgerald says that she and Sinn Fein’s Caroline Dwane-Stanley are working to set up a meeting to determine what can be done to prevent this happening again.

She said: “Myself and Cllr Dwane-Stanley have spoken to Director of Services Donal Brennan to set up a meeting between the Portlaoise Councillors, the Gardai and members of the Cemetery Committee.

“There is no CCTV up there and the lightening is very bad too – it is pitch dark at night time.

“I cannot get my head around it. I cannot understand this type of vandalism at all, it is disgusting.

“It is beyond me and it is deeply upsetting for the families. People are very upset by it all. It is so disrespectful.”

Gardai have appealed to anyone with information or who saw anything suspicious to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on -57 867 4100.
