In Pictures: Day of celebration in Ballyfin as new playground is officially opened

The newest playground in Laois was officially opened on Sunday as the community of Ballyfin came out in force to size up the area’s latest amenity.

A huge local volunteer effort had gone into doing the necessary work behind the scenes – and though they’d hoped to get it open before Chritsmas, it was certainly a case of better late than ever.

New playgrounds have popped up all over the county in recent years and barely a month goes by now without calls for another one as each village and town, no matter how small, want their own playground.

And it’s hard to argue with their merits. Free, outdoor facilities, enjoyed by children of all ages are certain to be welcomed.

And there was a great buzz in Ballyfin on Sunday as the ribbon was cut, the dignitaries headed up by Cathaoirleach of Laois County Council. Many of his fellow council members were also in attendance.

The playground is located beside the Ballyfin GAA grounds, making that stretch of road the real hub of the rural community.

School, church, playground and GAA pitch are all within walking distance of one another. All of them boasting top class facilities for those in the area.

Young and old alike were in Ballyfin on Sunday morning where the official duties were performed. You can check out a selection of images below from photographer Michael Scully.
