The week that was: Our most read stories of the past seven days

    1 – Remembering some of the great Laois people who sadly left us in 2023

    As one year ends and the next one begins, we often find ourselves looking back on the people we have lost.

    Laois lost a number of great people over the last 12 months and below, we will remember some of them who featured on our site.

    Our deepest sympathies go to their families and loved ones.

    2 – Two babies born on New Year’s Day at Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise

    There was great joy on New Year’s Day in Portlaoise Hospital as two babies were born in the very first hours of the new year.

    The first baby of the new year – a boy delivered at 12.04am – was born in Dublin’s Rotunda Hospital.

    And the first Laois baby wasn’t too far behind as she came into the world 56 minutes later.

    3 – Portarlington appoint former Laois senior footballer as manager for 2024 season

    Portarlington have appointed former Laois senior footballer Pat Roe as their manager for the 2024 season.

    Roe succeeds Galway native Anthony Cunningham who departs after one season in charge.

    4 – In Pictures: All Smiles in Timahoe as Noel Ramsbottom Memorial Run proves a big hit

    There was great excitement in Timahoe due to the second running of the newly established Noel Ramsbottom memorial 5KM run held over Christmas.

    Noel, who was known far and wide throughout the country, was a local legend in the Timahoe area who sadly passed away in late 2022.

    5 – Sadness as owner of well-known Laois business passes away

    There was sadness in Laois, Meath and Tipperary this week following the passing of a well-known Laois business owner.

    Richard Doyle, of Blackhall Little, Kilcloon, Meath, passed away on Saturday, December 30.

    6 – Seven clubs represented in LaoisToday Senior Football Team of the Year for 2023

    As the year draws to a close, we in LaoisToday have put our heads together to come up with our Senior Football Team of the Year for 2023.

    In all, seven clubs were represented, with winners, St Joseph’s leading the way.

    7 – Former Laois U-20 football manager Kinsella appointed boss at Westmeath club

    Former Laois U-20 football manager Eddie Kinsella has been appointed as the new boss of a Westmeath senior football club.

    The Courtwood man will be in charge of Tyrrellspass for the upcoming 2024 season.

    8 – Late scores see Offaly get the better of Laois in O’Byrne Cup

    Three late Offaly points were the vital scores as the visitors got the better of Laois in the opening round of the O’Byrne Cup this evening in Stradbally.

    With Christmas and the New Year out of the way, there was a decent crowd in Stradbally for the first competitive game of the 2024 season.

    9 – Gardai renew appeal for missing Laois woman on the eve of 30th anniversary of her disappearance

    January 3 marked the 30th anniversary of the disappearance of 22-year-old Laois woman Imelda Keenan.

    Imelda was last seen on Monday, January 3, 1994 in Waterford.

    On the eve of her disappearance, Gardai renewed their appeal for information.

    10 – Camross to the fore in the 2023 LaoisToday Senior Hurling Team of the Year

    What an exciting year it was in the top tier of hurling here in Laois, leaving us in LaoisToday the almost impossible task of selecting our team of the year.

    While the County team had a disappointing season, the senior clubs created some of the biggest and best moments of the year.
