Wolfhill Athletic FC’s jersey presentation night took place on Friday, December 15, in Leech’s Bar Wolfhill.
Wolfhill was reestablished this year after a three year exodus from the Carlow and District Soccer League.
Wolfhill was set up in 1990 in the wake of the heroic performance from the Irish soccer team in the 1990 world cup, which inspired the community set up a soccer team.
The team was originally set up by Eamonn Leech, Frank Langton, Bernard Wheatley Snr, Enda Gohery and Noel Leech Snr.
The clubs crowning moment came in 2005 when they won the Carlow Cup after beating Stretford United, where only a single goal scored by Liam “Squeeks” Kealy (RIP) separated the two sides.
The club sadly disbanded in 2020 due to the soccer season clashing with the ever lengthening club GAA season, coupled with a lack of players in the area leading to the clubs dismissal.
However with a new group of young players and a newly found hunger for soccer in the area, Wolfhill have re-emerged for this coming soccer year.
Under the guidance of Bernard Wheatley Snr and P.J “Froggy” Rowan, Wolfhill aim to bring the glory days they once had in amateur soccer back to area and with that, a sense of local pride.
