The New Year’s Day walk in Timahoe has long been a reliable date in the diary – and though Covid stopped it in its tracks for a while, it’s now back in its usual spot.
For years it was a great fundraiser for the Irish Wheelchair Association and the local Fatima Invalid Fund.
And for years it was organised by the much-loved local community man Johnny Dalton.
For the first time in over 20 years it didn’t take place in January 2021 – and only a short time later Johnny sadly passed away.
His son David has since taken over the organisation of it with all funds raised on the day set to go to the Irish Wheelchair Association.
Mick Dempsey, the former Laois football great who guided his club St Joseph’s to a first senior success in 23 years this season, is set to do the official duties and formally start the walk.
A feature of the walk over the years has been the presence of a high-profile personality to lead the walk off, which takes in the scenic Fossey Mountains as part of the loop.
Alison Miller, Zach Tuohy, Pat Critchley, Ross Munnelly and the McDonalds from Ireland’s Fittest Family have been among the people to lead the walk.
Refreshments will be served in the Timahoe hall after the walk by Bia Blasta Catering services.
The walk will begin at 1pm. For further information, you can contact David Dalton on 087 1305448.
There will be no better way to start off the New Year!
