A new sports book has been launched by a Laois primary school teacher.
The launch was held on Wednesday, December 6, at Kavanagh’s of Main Street in Portlaoise.
Garrett Malone, who works at Holy Family Senior School in Portlaoise, is the author of the publication entitled Goal-den Days.
Illustrated by Scoil Chríost Rí student Molly Byrne, and with a foreword by sports journalist of the year, Malachy Clerkin of the Irish Times; the hardback book is described as “the coming-of-age memoir of a sports fanatic”.
Roughly covering the period from 1985-1998, the book is an exercise in nostalgia.
It covers everything from the thrills of Italia ’90 to the tribulations of supporting Laois; and is a story which will resonate with those who collected Panini stickers or wore Mikasa gloves to training.
MC for the official launch was retired principal of the Holy Family Senior School, Mr Des Sutton.
A large gathering of Garrett’s family and friends were in attendance.
While music was provided by Paul Finn of trad group Téada, and Brian Finn from the band Small Panic.
Published by Lettertec in Cork, the book is available from local store All Books, and also online from both Allbooks.ie and lettertecbookstore.com , priced at €15.
