Laois County Council are being called upon to improve the safety of county’s roads and make driving conditions easier for Laois road users.
Cllr Barry Walsh was speaking at the Portlaoise Municipal District meeting this week, where he began by seeking flood review at Clonbrin Corner, Ballyroan.
“This area is prone to flooding and needs flood relief measures installed as it is causing a traffic hazard when flooded on a very busy road,” The Fine Gael Cllr said.
He went on to say that the fire service was called recently to remove water from the area, saying traffic coming at high speed can cause serious problems when they encounter water lying on the road at this corner.
Mr Wes Wilkinson, Senior Executive Engineer said he will personally examine the location with Cllr Walsh.
Next, the Cllr called on Laois County Council to write to Coillte and request an annual hedge cutting maintenance plan for all lands with road frontage within the Portlaoise MD and Laois County area.
“Regular hedge cutting notices have been issued in the Graiguenahowan / Spink area which cause a potentially hazardous situation for road traffic,” Cllr Walsh said.
Cllr John Joe Fennelly supported the motion, saying many residents believe Coilte do not have a plan for the area.
Mr Wilkinson said the Portlaoise MD Office will contact Coillte in this regard.
Cllr Walsh finished by calling on the Council to check all salt bins throughout the Portlaoise Municipal District saying “some are letting water in and may require some hardware to ensure correct closure when not in use.”
Mr Wilkinson said the MD Office will examine the salt bins to ensure that they are filled and weatherproof.
