The Listowel Racing Festival is taking place this week in Kerry and a horse that is owned and trained in Laois was victorious yesterday.
Ballyglass Beauty galloped to glory in the 3.15pm Devon Hill Handicap Hurdle.
The horse is owned by the Mountrath based Bennett’s Bar Syndicate and trained by Mountrath’s Liam Cusack.
Well off the pace early on, jockey Charlie O’Dwyer slowly guided the seven-year-old through the field as three mile contest unfolded.
He hit the front two fences from the finish and went on to record his third success of his career.
Ballyglass Beauty went off at odds of 11/2 and claimed the first prize of €10,500.
Speaking to IrishRacing.com afterwards, trainer Cusack said: “He’s a game little horse, he’s not overbig and I thought with a light weight it could suit him.
“I said to Charlie ‘get him settled and creep away — ride him to get a bit of money’ and it’s worked out lovely.
“I walked the track and felt we’d be okay. Most Westerners handle heavy but he’s a small, light enough type of horse and it was a concern.
“We got away with soft, I don’t think he’d handle heavy.
“He does stay and he was fit. He’s consistent and had no weight on his back.”
“It was my only runner so it worked out well”
