Cahill takes top spot at the second annual John Duggan Memorial Cup

The second year of the John Duggan Memorial Cup got underway recently at The Heath Golf Course.

Congratulations go to Mountrath club member, Seamie Cahill, who finished overall winner, winning a Range Finder watch.

“It is an honour to win the Cup as I knew John personally which means alot,” he said.

John Duggan sadly passed away in April 2021 and the first competition held in his memory took place last year.

John was widely known in teaching and sporting circles and was heavily involved in the school’s GAA teams over the years as well as with the Portlaoise GAA club, whom he played and coached with.

He was a keen golfer and in 2017 helped a team of Portlaoise CBS and Portlaoise College staff to win the inaugural All Ireland Teachers Golf Championship.

32 single figure or lower golfers played in the event with a fantastic spread of ages from teenagers to 80-years-olds.

11 golf clubs were represented, including Mountrath, Portlaoise, The Heath, The Heritage, Portarlington, The Millicent, Malahide, Liseen Springs, Esker Hills, Enniscrone and Athy.

Mark Keenan was captain this year and sourced some fantastic prizes. Shaun Tobin will be captain for 2024.

Kevin Sheehan said: “Thanks also to all of the sponsors. Kevin Holland in Druids Golf; Sean Brown in Brown’s Off Licence Portlaoise; Coco’s Superstore, Portlaoise; Downeys Centra Mark O’Boyle, Pro, Heath Golf Club.

“Thanks also to Deirdre’s Bistro for the amazing food. Also The Heath Golf Club for the course.”
