Local Councillor calls for invasive Japanese Knotweed to be brought under control

Cllr Seamus McDonald has called on Laois County Council to inspect and treat Japanese knotweed at Cavan Street, Ballyfin.

The Fianna Fáil Cllr was speaking at the Borris-in-Ossory-Mountmellick Municipal District Committee meeting this week.

Japanese knotweed is an dangerous, invasive, non-native weed.

It will push its way through expansion joints in concrete, cavity walls; it weaknesses in the broken mortar between paving slabs and bricks; and can also damage drains and sewers.

While structural damage is rare in most residential situations, if left unchecked, a mature infestation of Japanese Knotweed can become critical.

Mr. Edmond Kenny, District Engineer said: “Where the species is identified on the public road efforts will be made to control its growth over the summer months.”

Cllr McDonald aslo called on the Council to erect new signs and mark the road at Ballyclare Bridge, Rosenallis and carry out road repairs at Seskin, Cadamstown.

Cllr McDonald said a number of accidents have taken place at this at Ballyclare Bridge, which was corroborated by party colleague, Paddy Bracken.

Mr Kenny said an Engineer from Laois County Council will meet with Cllr McDonald at this location to establish the issues of concern and identify safety improvement works.

In addressing the road repairs, Mr Kenny said: “Maintenance crews will undertake road repairs this week in the townlands of Ballynahow / Garryhedder.”
