The death has occurred of Tommy Dunne senior, a highly-regarded figure in the Laois GAA community and a well-known builder in Portarlington, Ballybrittas and surrounding areas.
Though living in Portarlington for a long number of years, Tommy was associated closely with the Courtwood GAA club.
He was one of the club’s first ever representatives on a Laois team and played at centre-forward in the 1968 Leinster senior final loss to Longford.
Indeed on that occasion he was one of five players from the Emo parish on that Laois team, alongside his Courtwood clubmate Danny Luttrell and Brian, Gabriel and Johnny Lawlor from Emo, whom he’d played with at underage level.
With his club Courtwood he was a leading light as they won back-to-back junior and intermediate titles in 1970 and 1971 and was still involved when they repeated that feat in 1986 and 1987.
He held various positions within the Courtwood club as well as training the team on numerous occasions also.
Formerly of Coolroe, Ballybrittas, Tommy passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the Mater Private, Hospital Dublin.
He is predeceased by his parents Tom and Ellen, brother Paddy and sister Emmy.
Deeply regretted by his loving wife Sheila, son Tommy, daughter Sheila and her partner Darren, brothers Martin and Johnny, sisters Molly, Ellen (Nellie), Julia, Kathleen, Ann, Frances and Bride, grandchildren Alex, Ashton, Abby and Cian, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Reposing at Maher’s Chapel of Rest, Portarlington on Saturday evening from 5pm with Rosary at 8pm. Removal on Sunday at 1.15pm arriving The Sacred Heart Church, Rath for Requiem Mass at 2pm.
Funeral afterwards to Moyanna Cemetery (travelling via Coolroe). House Private, Please.
