A former pupil has been appointed as a Laois secondary school’s first ever female Deputy Principal.
Carole Devine is the new Deputy Principal of St Fergal’s College in Rathdowney.
Her appointment received a warm welcome from students, staff, parents and the Board of Management.

Two Laois families are set to star in a new RTE One TV show next week and they will be bidding to win the top prize of €5,000.
What Planet Are You On?, presented by Maia Dunphy, will air next week during Climate Action Week next week, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The brand new series of the hit RTE TV Show ‘Ireland’s Fittest Family’ got underway on Sunday – and there was Laois involvement.
The Gallaghers from Portarlington were up in the opening episode of the latest series of the show.
4 – Portlaoise student receives prestigious Naughton scholarship for outstanding Leaving Cert results
A Portlaoise student has been awarded the prestigious Naughton Scholarship following her outstanding Leaving Cert results.
Ella Byrne, who sat her Leaving Cert in Scoil Chriost Ri during the summer, has been awarded.
5 – Maher and Dunphy to the fore again as Clough-Ballacolla seal third straight Laois SHC title
Clough-Ballacolla claimed the Bob O’Keeffe Cup for the third successive year following a comprehensive victory in O’Moore Park last Sunday.
Stephen Maher and Willie Dunphy, as they so often have been over the years, were in excellent form again.
6 – In Pictures: Wonderful selection of images as Abbeyleix celebrate Premier IHC success
The Abbeyleix adult hurlers are enjoying a great season and their top team claimed the most important title last weekend in O’Moore Park when they got the better of Clonaslee-St Manman’s in the Premier IHC final.
Having been relegated from senior last year they made sure that their stay in the lower grade was as short as possible.
7 – A famine ended as St Joseph’s defeat Stradbally Parish Gaels for first Minor since 1968
St Joseph’s were crowned Minor A football champions last week following a titanic battle with Stradbally Parish Gaels.
It was a first title for the Kellyville club at this level since 1968 – ending a drought of 54 years.
8 – In Pictures: Glorious scenes as Clough-Ballacolla celebrate third straight Senior hurling title
Clough-Ballacolla were crowned Laois Senior hurling championships for the third successive year in O’Moore Park on Sunday.
Declan Laffan’s charges have now won 14 straight matches in a run that extends all the way back to 2019.
9 – Rafter leads the way as Clough-Ballacolla see off Mountmellick challenge for Intermediate glory
Chris Rafter was in fine form as Clough-Ballacolla came from behind to see off the challenge of Mountmellick to claim Intermediate glory.
He finished the game with 2-6 and his goal before half time proved crucial as it cut the deficit from five to two at the break.
10 – In Pictures: Tributes paid as long-serving Laois primary school principal retires
Friday September 30 was a very emotional day at Scoil Mhuire Fatima as the community of Timahoe celebrated the retirement of Principal Ann Bergin.
In was a bittersweet day from start to finish and it all began in the school hall where students and staff gathered to thank Mrs. Bergin and to wish her well on her retirement.
